Caroline Sandford, Activity Organiser at Saltwood Care Centre, has been named a South East regional finalist in the Care Home Activity Organiser Award at the Great British Care Awards 2026.

This is a wonderful achievement for Caroline and an opportunity to celebrate the important role activities play in care home life. From opportunities to socialise to quieter moments of companionship, meaningful engagement helps residents feel connected, included and at home.

An activity organiser’s role goes far beyond planning events. It is about getting to know each resident, understanding their interests and preferences, and finding ways to make everyday life enjoyable and fulfilling.

Everyone brings their own experiences, hobbies and routines into a care home. Supporting those individual interests helps people maintain a sense of identity and make choices about how they spend their time. Equally, opportunities to try something different can spark curiosity, encourage conversation and bring people together.

For some residents, enjoyment comes from taking part in a group activity. For others, a familiar pastime or time spent chatting with someone can be just as valuable. A thoughtful approach to activities makes room for these different preferences, recognising that meaningful participation looks different for everyone.
